My Statement Concerning President-Elect Trump's Inauguration: As I wrote last March, I believe Donald Trump is a unique threat to the Constitution and to our country. I have never before used such stark terms to describe an American political leader, Democrat or Republican. I do not use these words lightly. But Trump warrants such dramatic description. On January 6, as dictated by the Constitution, Congress met in joint session to certify the results of the Electoral College. As a member of Congress, I attended and participated in this joint session. As vehemently as I disagree with the election results, I fulfilled my constitutional obligation. Now the question turns to whether to attend the Inaugural celebration. I have always believed the Inaugural of the President of the United States should be a nonpolitical day. As just a regular citizen, it is an event I have always looked forward to watching. Regardless of the person taking the oath and the party taking power, I have always looked at it as a day to celebrate American democracy. It is the continuation of that which started with Washington, the peaceful transfer of power in accordance to the wishes of the people. The election of Donald Trump presents a challenge to my long held view of presidential inaugurations. As much as I cherish this day, can I in good conscience celebrate that which I believe is a grave mistake? Can I sit by mere yards away and applaud the desecration of the most important office in the history of the world? After wrestling with this question for the last two months, I have concluded I cannot participate in this Inaugural celebration. I do not challenge that Mr Trump won the Electoral College and therefore will lawfully be president. We cannot go down a path in which we do not accept the legitimacy of the choice of the people. In America, it is the people who decide. I accept the decision of the people. I respect it. But I will not celebrate it. Congressman Brendan F. Boyle 13th District U.S. House of Representatives ... Joe Bannon Sr.Your saying he is the" choice of the people". You being elected as the "choice of the people", shouldn't you be there representing the people who made that choice??23 hours ago

Craig RollersonThank you for taking this bold step Rep. Boyle. Democracy does not demand that everyone be in agreement. Dictatorship and authoritarian rule does that.22 hours ago

Jim BradleyI support your decision. Please lead or join an effort to combat gerrymandering and redistricting so that the majority of people will once again own the outcome of our elections. Thank you.22 hours ago

Leslie TurnerI know you didn't take this decision lightly. But with so many taking backlash for their decision to not be there I'm glad you are standing by your convictions.22 hours ago

June FoxThis is a heartbreaking event coming up. We have made a terrible mistake and many will suffer. I hope we learn from it and can once again grow and learn to love. Congress must be more fair though. They really trashed our good President and all the people they were there to work for. They were shameful and I hope they will suffer the consequences.22 hours ago

Pam Loftus MarionI did vote for you but I am very disappointed in your decision. ..This is an important day for our country...we all need to stand together and support our President. ...after all people have spoken...just disappointed. ...21 hours ago

Rich WestcottGood job Brendan. Take every opportunity to remind the President-elect that if he continues to disrespect the values of the United States of America, then we must continue to turn our back on him. With all that we've been through, I can honestly say I've never been so disgusted than I have been with this man's character and conduct.20 hours ago

Robert CullenWell done sir. Now I hope your Democrat colleagues will take note and oppose every wool-headed decision this president will make with the same vehemence and venom (yes, venom) as Republicans have fought President Obama for the last eight years.18 hours ago

Christine DiRienzoThank you for NOT attending this inauguration. I am embarrased America had allowed a foreign nation to interfere with something as vital to out nation's democracy as an election. You and the other members of Congress must take a stand now; otherwise, non action will be your endorsement of a rigged election.17 hours ago

Barbara BradiganJust a reminder that even if you are "safely" ensconced behind employer-provided insurance, the protections set forth in the ACA apply to you, too. If those protections are repealed along with the rest (or any part) of the program, you will also be affected. That means you may be trapped in a job, because your pre-existing condition may mean you will not qualify for new insurance offered by another employer, and the cost of private insurance would be prohibitive. If your employer shuts down, lays you off, or even changes insurers, well, you are out of luck. The Senate GOP voted last week that they would not require an eventual ACA replacement to protect against discrimination for pre-existing conditions, which was the standard before the ACA. It means that a young adult under the age of 26 may find themselves without the protection of insurance, as the Senate GOP voted last week that an eventual ACA replacement will not be required to allow young people to remain on their parents' employer-provided insurance up to the age of 26. It means that if you have a high-risk pregnancy, or life-threatening illness such as cancer, you may not be able to afford all the care you need, because you may hit lifetime or annual caps. If you have an infant born with any kind of severe medical condition, or premature, they may hit their lifetime insurance cap before they are old enough to walk. The Senate GOP voted last week that an eventual ACA replacement program would not be required to prohibit lifetime insurance caps. It means that if you are a struggling parent who is un- or underinsured, you will no longer be able to count on at least your kids getting the routine medical and dental care they need under the Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). The Senate GOP voted that CHIP is not required to be protected by an eventual ACA replacement. These provisions of the ACA affect everyone in this country, not just those without insurance through their employers. If you are not okay with these changes, call your representatives and let them know what's important to you. Nothing has been set in stone yet, but our legislators have shown us a map of what they plan to do if constituents don't make their voices heard loud and clear. IF YOU WANT TO SHARE THIS, RATHER THAN CLICKING "SHARE" (WHICH MAKES SOMETIMES ONLY MAKES THINGS VISIBLE TO OUR IN-COMMON FRIENDS), CONSIDER COPYING AND PASTING THE TEXT.1 day ago
